Advanced Redox Equation Balancing

We have already considered simple Redox reactions and a not so simple Disproportionation Reactions. Those could be easily balanced and parameterized by means of Electrochemistry tool. But what if there are more than two basic redoxes take place within single reaction (let alone non-conventional redox states…) ? Here we will consider a good example by balancing a following beast:

Cr7N66H96C42O24 + MnO4 + H+ = Cr2O72- + Mn2+ + CO2 + NO3 + H2O

Redox Disproportionation Reactions

Disproportionation reactions is a special type of redox reactions where atoms of the same element change their oxidation states towards oxidation and reduction simultaniously.  Important to notice that atoms can participate in reaction as single entities or whithin polyatomic molecules, bearing charge (ions) or uncharged. We are going to use Electrochemistry application to analyse several disproportionation reactions.

Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry is an application available on Apple Store for iOS and Mac, that helps to deal with oxidation-reduction reactions and electrochemical cells. The app combines a standard half-reactions into a single redox equation and finds the overall standard potential, equilibrium constant, free Gibbs energy and total voltage in accordance with Nernst equation. See also the app implementation in redox disproportionation reactions.
